Secrets have a strange power. There is something compelling and seductive about the idea that the covert and concealed might be revealed to us, if only we could discover the key. We are inexplicably drawn to those things unknown, unseen, misunderstood, or impossible. There is a sense that if we could ever learn to decipher hidden codes and meanings perhaps the greatest mysteries of all could be revealed to us ? we could be possessed of a deeper, fundamental knowledge of the world, and of ourselves.

nca | nichido contemporary art is pleased to present British artist, Jan Dunning’s first solo exhibition in Tokyo, Japan. The show will present “Secrets” a series of photograph works.
Jan Dunning works with pinhole photography for the similar way in which it combines the apparently opposing realms of the magical and the realistic, bridging the material and the immaterial worlds. She also explores the realities and fictions of human beings within nature, still life and mythology. The New works for this exhibition are about secrets in various forms: secrets of photography and of mythology, secrets of nature and of creation, and especially secrets of the imagination. The work exploits the ambiguous stance of the pinhole photograph to present a series of plausible, yet unnerving remote and magical landscapes within which the viewer can both lose and find themselves at once.
