Solo exhibition: Youkan and Cream
Shinya Imanishi presents his solo show “YOUKAN and CREAM” as part of the satellite event section of “ARTISTS’ FAIR KYOTO” on view in Kyoto, March 6/7. The solo show will be held at the gallery space Bijuu from March 4 to 7.
Shinya Imanishi creates his paintings through the repetition of a set of actions: first, the artist applies several thick layers of oil paint to the canvas, then, through a vigorous touch, he leaves visible brushstrokes on the painted surface and finally scoops out the paint as he goes. The smallest change in our perspective or stance brings to light new visual possibilities that seek to unveil the ambiguity and uncertainty of the things we deem familiar.
The title of this exhibition "YOUKAN and CREAM" comes from a passage in Junichiro Tanizaki's "In Praise of Shadows", describing the Japanese aesthetics and contemplation regarding color, and it is an attempt to express the transition of light using Western materials (paint).
