nca | nichido contemporary art is delighted to represent the fifth group exhibition, “Identity”.
This exhibition is curated by Mr. Hiroshi Minamishima under the theme of “Identity” from his point of view.
In and Around Identity’s Shadow
When I coincide with myself, or the world, a faint shadow creeps up on me from somewhere or other.
He/she slips into that slender threshold between me and myself, leaving behind only a slight sense of discomfort, insisting that “I” am “myself.” Then he/she dissolves, and disappears someplace else.
The shadow of my identity controls who I “am”: it desires that I be “me.”
When I coincide with myself, or the world, a silent shadow calls out to me from somewhere or other.
He/she leaves the words that connect me to the world suspended in midair, spinning out their true sounds.
To be able to truly be one with myself and the world is not a matter of identity itself, but rather the pursuit of its shadow, its voice.
When I coincide with a single painting, where is that shadow concealed? What sort of voice is it trying to read the world with?

Hiroshi Minamishima ;
Professor of Joshibi University of Art and Design and the former Director of Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto, was born in Nagano, Japan in 1957. After graduating from the School of Art and Design, University of Tsukuba, Mr. Minamishima was involved in the founding of several museums in Japan, including Iwaki City Art Museum and the Hiroshima City Museum of Contemporary Art. In 1993, he received a scholarship from the Fondation Cartier pour l’art contemporain and studied in Paris, while working as an independent curator, producing such projects as the Poland tour of the renowned butoh dance group, Asbestos Studio. From 2000, he worked for the establishment of the Contemporary Art Museum, Kumamoto (CAMK) and served as the founding director until 2008. During his tenure at CAMK, he curated the exhibitions, Attitude: One Truth in Your Heart (2002), Marina Abramovic: The Star (2003-04), Iki-ningyo and Kisaburo Matsumoto (2004), Ann Hamilton: voce (2006), and Attitude: The House of Human Beings – Authentically Blessed Jubilance (2007), through which he has raised awareness a variety of artistic expressions that are often neglected, ranging from contemporary art in the former Socialist countries, the art works made by Hansen’s disease sufferers, to the Iki-ningyo, traditional spectacle dolls as a form of anti-modernism. Mr. Minamishina was one of the co-curators of the International Triennale of Contemporary Art (ITCA) 2008 in Prague, 2009, commissioner of Japanese Pavilion of the 53rd Venice Biennale
