nichido contemporary art is delighted to represent the second exhibition of Garry Fabian Miller. Until the mid 1970s, Miller used a camera to make his works, but from the 1980s he abandoned it to focus on making images with his own distinctive technique of working directly on photographic paper covered in light-sensitive material. We will introduce 17 works including his newest works in this exhibition. We hope that you will take the opportunity to enjoy these fascinating works.
"Yesterday I remembered a time when I saw the light of the sun falling on the granite floor of a church, reaching towards a white lily. Recalling that moment stirred up the emotions I get about those occurrences that I love so much. In the blackness of the darkroom, I recall those feelings, and explore techniques that can realize them through light alone." (From the catalogue to "Observances" exhibition, 1995)
Miller takes the richness of "light" itself, which we perceive through its profound relation to nature, and turns it into "images of light". These images are made in the midst of darkness, and yet they are not closed - rather they are open to the cosmos of light. What touches our innermost soul in Miller's works is the fact that the light he depicts takes on universal significance. (Masafumi Fukagawa Curator, Kawasaki City Museum)
