Jean-Luc Moerman
9 September - 8 October 2005
Artist Reception: 9 September 18:00 - 20:00
nichido contemporary art is pleased to inform that we are going to present, the Belgian artist, Jean-Luc Moerman's first solo show in Tokyo, Japan with his new works.
Moerman draws tattoos onto the clips of magazines or posters. Originally tattoo is from Eastern philosophy to symbolize the personal identities such as religion, classes and so on. On the other hand, Moerman put the tattoos onto the models in the magazines, such as Kate Moss on Vogue, nude models on the Playboy magazine and George Bush on the cover of Time magazine. It can be also said that by drawing tattoos he puts the additional values to the commodities that are usually consumed and dumped so quickly. They give a strong visual impact to the audience. That is because of not only the elaborated unique graphics but also a glimpse into the face under the mask of the subject.
Jean-Luc Moerman was born in Brussels, Belgium, 1967. Has been working in Europe since late 1990s. Had several projects or exhibitions at La Criee, Rennes, France (2004), BPS22, Charleroi, Belgium (2002, 04), Galerie Rodolphe Janssen, Brussels (2003), ArtUnlimited Basel (2005), Galerie Suzanne Tarasieve, Paris (2005), and MUDAM, Lexemburg (2006). Published the book "The Art of Jean-Luc Moerman" in 2005, including the conversation with Hans Ulrich Obrist in 2003.
