18 November - 22 December 2005
Artist Reception: 18 November 18:00 - 20:00
Nichido contemporary art is pleased to inform you that we are going to present the exhibition "Fabulous Anger" by Carter Kustera. This show will be his first solo show in Japan.
With his unique satirical style, Carter Kustera keenly depicts our identity in a consumer driven society often presenting various urban scenes involving violence. Contrary to popular fashion ads that solely create superficial beauty and glamour, his paintings illustrate problems in urban societies, such as random, strategic and domestic violence. Each painting references the "fashion layout", with it's graphics, text and beautiful models dressed in extravagant and stylish attire.
In his work titled "Killed by Art", one woman lies dead on the floor under a drawing by international artist Robert Longo. The copy in the painting reads "The thing you love the most is always the most dangerous" and the prices and makers of her clothing are presented in precise detail. Carter Kusteraユs art grasps the nature of a consumer society by contrasting the price of fashion and the deeds of those who wear it.
Carter Kustera was born in Ontario, Canada and lives and works in New York since 1983. His works have been shown in Canada the U.S. and several international group shows including two Venice Biennales. His first solo show was in New York (1990). Other related projects include a bathroom design for the Kohler Arts Center in Wisconsin, animation for U2's "Pop Mart," World Tour, product design for O.R.E. Originals and visual creations for Barneys New York CO-OP stores.
